output

The workflow-level output field sets the default command output mode for all steps in the workflow.

Values​

raw
Pass command output directly to the terminal. This is the default behavior.
log
Display grouped output with step headers.
viewport
Show a live window of recent stdout and stderr while the step runs, collapse it on success, and reveal the full captured output on failure.
none
Suppress command output and rely on the exit code.

Step-level output overrides the workflow-level default for that step.

Live viewport​

Use output: viewport to follow a noisy command in a bounded terminal window:

viewport.height caps the total window height, including its status row. A height of 4 shows up to three recent output lines and one status row. viewport.width optionally caps the width; long lines are truncated in the live display. Without these settings, the window uses the terminal dimensions and adjusts on resize.

viewport.padding adds that many blank columns on both sides of the live output and status row. It defaults to 0; use 2 for a two-character inset. Padding is included within the width and shrinks automatically in very narrow terminals.

The window follows new output automatically and closes when the command finishes; it does not wait for a keypress. Successful output collapses to a completion line. Failures reveal the full captured stdout and stderr after clearing the live window. Captured step results retain the complete output, and secret masking still applies.

In CI or when terminal output is redirected, output streams normally without cursor controls. Terminal sessions (tty, interactive, and exec) own their output and bypass the viewport.
